Vaccinations for Puppies and Dogs

Vaccines are one of the most effective ways to keep your loyal companion safe. When your pet is fully immunized they have a better chance to fight off germs and illnesses that are in their surroundings. To ensure all of our patients are kept safe we work with pet parents to create a vaccination schedule that works best for their pets. Which vaccines are mandatory for my pet?

Core vaccines are mandatory because they protect against diseases that are severe and easily transmitted. Some vaccines that all puppies and dogs need are:

  • Rabies (legally mandated)
  • Canine Parvovirus
  • Canine Distemper
  • Canine Hepatitis

What other vaccines might be recommended for my puppy/dog?

Our veterinarian will discuss whether your pet has any exposure risks in their environment that may make them susceptible to certain diseases. Non-core vaccines include Lyme disease and Bordetella (kennel cough). These vaccines are recommended on a case-by-case basis.

When should my puppy/dog be vaccinated?

Veterinarians recommend that puppies begin their first vaccines around 8-weeks-old. Their puppy shots are given every 4 weeks until they are 6-months-old. We usually administer core vaccines during this stage. As adult dogs, they will receive booster shots once every three years or once every year depending on the specific vaccine.
